Original report
Police officers at checkpoints along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway are demanding between ā¦5,000 and ā¦50,000 from commercial drivers and private motorists who they stop for "routine checks." The officers usually target commercial buses, trucks, and cars with visible damage or missing papers that they claim to be out of date. When a driver refuses to pay, the officers either delay the vehicle for hours, threaten to impound it, or in some cases physically harass the driver. This happens mostly at night between 8pm and 5am, especially around the Ogere, Sapade, and Ijebu-Ode sections. Drivers who have complained through the Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU) say nothing changes. This practice has been documented by SERAP, Premium Times, and Amnesty International over multiple years but the practice continues. The IGP needs to answer for why these specific checkpoints still operate this way.
